Learning outcomes
Knows the etiopathogenesis, epidemiology, public health implications of the main diseases, in particular emerging ones, of aquatic animals kept in controlled environments (aquaculture, ornamental and exhibition aquaria) and the abiotic factors strongly influencing the aquatic environment and the health of aquatic animals. Know the basics of bee anatomy and the biology and physiology of the hive and the main pathogens that can compromise the colony. Finally, he knows the basic notions of therapeutic treatments of the main diseases of aquatic animals and bees, both with allopathic and phytotherapeutic drugs. He is able to apply appropriate biosecurity measures in the management of aquatic animals in a controlled environment, approach veterinary activities in the beekeeping field, approach the legislative aspects relating to the use of veterinary drugs in both sectors.
Course contents
This course consists of 5 modules:
Health management of aquatic animals in a controlled environment, held by Andrea Gustinelli - 12 hours
This module deals with the most important health issues in aquatic animals in a controlled environment: etiopathogenesis, epidemiology, implications in Public Health, biosecurity measures, role of the veterinarian. In particular:
- Health issues and management in mariculture and freshwater aquaculture
- Health issues and management in aquatic parks and exhibition aquaria of large marine vertebrates: marine mammals, elasmobranchs and sea turtles
- Health issues and management of fish farmed for ornamental and research purposes
Health management in beekeeping, held by Roberta Galuppi - 12 hours
This module provides basic notions of bee anatomy and hive biology and physiology; deals with major bee diseases and other adversities in beekeeping, including the risk of introduction of exotic pathogens and finally underlines the main regulatory aspects related to beekeeping, and the role played by the veterinarian in this sector
Pathological basis of diseases of aquatic animals held by Luciana Mandrioli - 6 hours
This module takes into consideration the abiotic factors, with particular reference to those strongly conditioning the aquatic environment, and the main causative biological agents of disease of aquatic species maintained in a controlled environment with aspects of associated histopathology.
Pharmacological approach in aquatic animals and bees, held by Anna Zaghini - 6 hours
This module provides basic notions on the therapeutic treatments of the main pathologies of aquatic animals and bees with both allopathic and phytotherapeutic drugs. Legislative aspects related to the use of veterinary drugs in these sectors will also be addressed.
Practical activities in the field and in the laboratory, under the supervision of Andrea Gustinelli - 12 hours
During this module practical laboratory activities and field technical visits to farms and recreational structures (aquaculture, exhibition parks, apiary) will be carried out.
During the laboratory training it is mandatory to wear the lab coat and closed shoes. When necessary, suitable PPE for carrying out specific activities, such as suitable and gloves, will be provided.

Teaching methods
The course includes both lectures and exercises in the laboratory and / or in the classroom, as described in the "course contents" section. All students who attend, for study and research reasons, laboratories and farms are equated, as regards their safety, to workers and as such must be trained on the correct procedures to be followed in activities with specific risks. The attendance of these training activities requires the performance of all students of modules 1 and 2 in e-learning mode and participation in module 3 of specific training on safety and health in the places of study. Information on dates and methods of attendance of module 3 can be consulted in the appropriate section of the course of study website. Students with any DISABILITIES or DSA, can contact the teacher by e-mail, to have adaptations to the teaching during the lesson, inserting in C / C the reference staff of the appropriate DISABILITY service or DSA of the University from which they are followed, and the contact person of the Department which is currently Dr. Fabiana Trombetti. The importance of attending lessons and practical activities is underlined, for a better interaction with the teacher, also in terms of critical discussion of the issues addressed, useful for the learning process
Assessment methods
Students can fix their exam trough the online system Almaesami.
The final assessment is carried out through a short presentation, individual or group, with presentation of a case study assigned by the teaching group.
The score is expressed with a mark out of thirtieths. The test is passed with a score of at least 18/30. In case of maximum vote (30/30) laudem can be attributed.
A very thorough knowledge of the topic, together with high critical analysis skills, connection and the use of proper specific terminology will be evaluated with the highest score (30-30L).

A technically adequate preparation and a sufficient capacity for analysis, even if not particularly articulated, expressed in correct language, will produce discrete evaluations (23-26).

Teaching tools
The theoretical lessons are conducted in a classroom equipped with multimedia equipment (PC and PC projector), mainly using PowerPoint slides; practical lessons are carried out in DIMEVET laboratories equipped for diagnostic activities and in the classroom equipped with multimedia instrumentation (PC and PC video projector), or in breeding
