82034 - Specialized Translation from Italian into French

Learning outcomes

The student knows the strategies, techniques, traditional and state-of-the-art tools and methods used in specialized translation tasks; s/he is able to apply them to the translation of technical and scientific texts from different genres and text types, from Italian into French, meeting specific translation briefs and respecting the communicative functions of the source texts; s/he knows the basic techniques required for information mining, drafting, editing and revising texts, including the overall quality evaluation of the translated text.

Course contents

The module (40 hours) is intended to extend and optimise the editorial, translation, technological and methodological skills acquired by students in previous translation courses, in order to set them on the path to achieving autonomy and professionalism.

The course will focus on the comprehension of the text in Italian and the correctness of the target text in French (fluent translation, idiomatic, adapted to the target audience, use of suitable terminology and application of typographical rules) in order to obtain a result that meets the requirements of the sector.

Proofreading and quality control processes will also be studied under conditions approaching actual conditions (compliance with delivery times).

Translation work will be carried out with the aid of computer-aided translation software.

The course will include the presentation of various customer requirements for target texts.

Finally, the course will focus on the various types of customers (private, direct, agencies) and their characteristic requirements.

The texts studied belong to the following sectors:
- Marketing/advertising
- Technical/scientific texts (manuals)
- Economic-political texts
- Corporate communication texts (product description, tourism translation)

Teaching methods

Seminar-style lectures with active student participation, involving the analysis of the proposed texts to identify their characteristics and complexities. The various aspects of documentary and terminology research will also be addressed.

Students will also practise translation with the help of computer-aided translation software. Activities include group and individual work.

The translation exercises carried out independently by the students will be corrected collectively with the aim of obtaining a finalised ‘client’ version of the text.

The module requires compulsory attendance (70% classroom attendance)

Assessment methods

At the end of the module, students will take a 3-hour translation test (approximately 250/300 words) in a fully equipped classroom. Students will have access to the Internet, mono- and bilingual dictionaries, glossaries and technical dictionaries, etc. However, machine translation will not be allowed. The topic and level of difficulty of the examination text will be in line with those of the texts proposed during the course. The tests will be assessed on the basis of content, form and technique descriptors, with a grade between <18 and 30L according to the table below.

Excellent test demonstrating excellent acquisition of the expected knowledge as well as language rendering skills demonstrating complete mastery of the target language/culture of study.

27-29

Above average paper with minor errors or otherwise compensated for by more than satisfactory demonstration of the knowledge and skills to be acquired.

24- 26

Good test, but with some obvious errors indicating partial acquisition of the required knowledge and skills.

21-23

Sufficient examination but with noticeable limitations in the knowledge and skills to be acquired.

18- 20

Evidence that only meets the minimum criteria of knowledge and skills to be acquired.

< 18 insufficient

Basic knowledge has not been achieved. The examination must be repeated.

The final grade represents the average of the grade for the present module of Specialised Translation from Italian into French and the grade for the module of Specialised Translation from French into Italian taught by Prof. Raus.

Teaching tools

All lectures will take place in a well-equipped laboratory using CAT-tools, MT and resources made up by the students or found online.
