Learning outcomes
The course is meant to provide students with the tools to simulate and understand turbulent flows. This includes basic elements of computational fluid dynamics and turbulence modelling. The student learns how to apply statistical methods to analyse turbulent flows and use his/her comprehension in turbulence to select the appropriate simulation techniques for the various applications.
Course contents
1. Short introduction to fluid mechanics equations and algorithms for the solution of partial differential equations (multi-step and Runge-Kutta methods and finite differences).
2. Convection diffusione equations. Spectral methods. Modified wave number. Von Neuman stability.
3. Discretization methods for Navier-Stokes equations. Projection methods and Poisson equations.
4. Short introduction to the physics of turbulence and its simulation.
5. Simulations techniques for turbulent flows. Direct numerical simulation. RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) and LES approaches.
The students will be asked to get acquainted with simulations and statistical analysis of turbulence.

Assessment methods
The students will be asked to complete courseworks and write some reports on some activities related to the first three parts of the course. If the reports are submitted before the end of the lessons, the exam will consist in the discussion of the reports and in a written test on the last two topics. Otherwise the student will have to sit a written exam on all the program.
