Learning outcomes
The student knows the fundamental principles of operation of automatic controls in open and closed loop, how to use the main components in the control loops and how to process data for the determination of control strategies.
Course contents
Introduction to control systems
Continuous-time dynamic systems
Introduction to dynamical systems. Equilibrium, linearization, stability.
Laplace transform and
transfer function
Laplace transform and transfer function of linear systems. System modes. Composition of systems’ block schemes.
Stability and responses of
elementary systems
Stability of linear systems. Temporal analysis of elementary systems (1st and 2nd
order). Influence of zeros in the temporal response.
Fourier series
Series and Fourier transforms. Steady state theorem and harmonic response function. Bode diagrams: rules for tracking diagrams of elementary and complex systems. Classification of systems (low pass, high, band, etc.). Spectrum of filtered signals.
The root locus
Sensitivity functions of feedback system
Controller design in the frequency domain
Specification analysis. Two-stage regulator design; Meeting static specifications. Trial and error project examples. Scenario analysis; Analysis of control structures.
