Learning outcomes

The aim of this course is to provide a thorough understanding of the theory and practice of financial assets valuation and problems within different trading markets. At the end of the course the student will be able to: - analyse the financing alternatives available to companies; - understand the economic and financial problems of the contexts in which firms and investors operate; - analyse the issue procedures of financial assets (i.e., issue of bonds and stocks).

Course contents

Part 1: Understanding Financial Markets

In the first part of the class, we review the main financial and economic events that shaped markets from 2008 to today. Our goal is to analyze market dynamics and draw conclusions based on practical observations. Among other events, we will cover:

  • 2008 Financial Crisis
  • European Debt Crisis
  • COVID-19 Pandemic
  • Selected Events in Emerging Markets
  • Monetary and Fiscal Policy Case Studies
  • Recent Developments in Bond and Equity Markets

Part 2: Risk and Return in Financial Markets

In the second part of the class, we cover individual asset classes, as well as portfolio construction and risk management applications. The focus is on understanding risk and return, and their determinants. Key topics include:

  • Bonds: Interest Rates and Credit Analysis
  • Single Stocks and Equity Indices
  • Commodities
  • Cryptocurrencies and Alternative Assets
  • ETFs and Mutual Funds
  • Portfolio Analysis and Risk Management

 

Readings/Bibliography

No book reading is mandatory: slides and other learning materials provided in class will suffice.

For comprehensive coverage of the topics covered in class, refer to "Investments" by Bodie, Marcus, and Kane, available in the university library.

Further readings may be suggested for students who want to deepen their understanding of specific topics.

Teaching methods

Lectures and problem-based learning with Excel and financial analysis software.

Assessment methods

The exam consists of multiple-choice questions (some questions may require calculations and practical exercises).

The exam will be conducted in-person (no remote format).

There will be two midterm exams.

It is possible to decline the grade and retake the exam during the official sessions according to school regulations.
