Learning outcomes
At the end of the module, the student knows the operational areas of competence of the midwife: gynecological, neonatal and obstetric area.
In these contexts she takes care of the person both from a clinical (midwifery cure) and support (midwifery care) as well as educational/informative (midwifery educator) point of view.
Faced with the demand for health inherent in the natural manifestations of the cycle of life, it acts with progressive autonomy.
You understand potentially pathological situations that require the contribution of the doctor and are able to provide the health measures necessary to safeguard the life of the person, in the absence of the doctor himself.
Course contents
The third-year professional internship is aimed at acquiring knowledge, skills, and behaviors specifically related to providing care during childbirth and the postpartum period, both in physiological and emergency settings, with attention also to the care of both healthy and ill newborns, as well as to the organizational aspects of midwifery care.
During this internship, the student has the opportunity to refine the techniques learned during the 20-hour WHO-UNICEF Course for breastfeeding support directed at mothers of newborns. In each internship experience, the student is supervised by a tutor who provides guidance and monitors the learning process.
The program also includes a two-week placement in which the student works alongside self-employed midwives, gaining experience with a care model focused on continuity and personalized support in out-of-hospital settings.
To be admitted to the internship exam, in addition to completing the required number of hours, the student must have achieved a satisfactory level in all clinical learning objectives defined for the academic year.

Teaching methods
Experiential learning – Students acquire practical skills through direct involvement in care activities under the supervision of experienced midwifery tutors.
Observation and progressive participation – Initially, students observe activities and are then gradually involved in performing procedures under supervision, until they develop greater autonomy.
Assessment methods
During the internship, learning is monitored through the following tools:
Daily activity log: the student documents the activities carried out, the cases followed, and personal reflections. The tutor assesses the student’s level of autonomy in the practices performed and suggests possible improvements.
Ongoing evaluation form: completed by the clinical tutor or internship supervisor to monitor progress throughout the internship.
Direct observation: the tutor assesses the student's technical, relational, and decision-making skills.
At the end of the internship period, learning assessment is based on:
Final evaluation form: the tutor assigns a final assessment based on the skills acquired, the level of professionalism, and the student’s autonomy.
The internship exam is structured as follows:
a) preparation and presentation of a PowerPoint on a topic of the student’s choice, delivered in a plenary session;
b) a practical test with a realistic simulation scenario aimed at verifying the achievement of the learning objectives for the academic year, including the student’s ability to communicate effectively with patients and service users.
During the exam, the examination board will pay particular attention to the student’s use of appropriate technical and scientific language.
The final evaluation will take into account all internship experiences completed.
