- Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering (cod. 8887)
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will have gained experience with the behavior of some typical process industry equipment under various operating conditions.
Course contents
The student enrolling in this course has acquired a solid understanding of thermodynamics and transport phenomena and has knowledge of the main unit operations in the chemical industry and the equipment used to carry them out. This knowledge is gained by passing the exams in Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics and Principles of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering and by attending the course on Unit Operations in the Process Industry.
All lectures will be conducted in Italian. Therefore, a good understanding of the Italian language is necessary to successfully follow the course and use the provided teaching materials.
Teaching methods
The course involves the preparation and execution of five laboratory experiments for the determination of:
-
Heat transfer in double-pipe heat exchangers: heat transfer coefficients
-
Heat transfer in shell and tube heat exchangers: heat transfer coefficients
-
Heat transfer in plate and frame heat exchangers: heat transfer coefficients
-
Fluid dynamics of packed columns: pressure drops and "flooding" of the packing
-
Diffusion and evaporation as a function of temperature: evaluation of diffusion coefficients and vapor pressure of chemical compounds
Assessment methods
For each of the five experiments, a group report must be prepared (no exceptions allowed).
To be eligible for the exam, the reports on the experiments conducted during the course must be submitted to the instructor at least one week before the exam.
During the exam, you will be required to present one of the experiments using slides and answer questions about the submitted reports.
Passing the exam will be guaranteed to students who demonstrate mastery and operational competence in relation to the key concepts covered in the course, particularly concerning the theoretical foundations of the unit operations analyzed, the methods for calculating and verifying unit operations, and the principles of operation of the equipment used. A higher score will be awarded to students who demonstrate an understanding and ability to apply all the course content, presenting it with clear language and showing the ability to deepen the theoretical concepts learned, even by connecting them to topics covered in prerequisite courses. Failure to pass the exam may result from insufficient knowledge of the key concepts in the reports and a lack of proficiency in technical language.
