Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student will understand the pathophysiological bases of chronic pain, evaluate a patient with chronic pain, and identify the different kinds of pain therapy (instrumental and pharmacological).

Course contents

The course will provide the student with notions of pain treatment as delineated by the "core curriculum" of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP). [" Outline curriculum on pain for medical schools - IASP to ad hoc Subcommittee on Medical School Courses and Curriculum"(1988) and" Core curriculum for professional education in pain - Task Force On Professional Education, Howard L. Fields, Editor - IASP" (1991)]:
1. Approach and evaluation of the patient with chronic pain
2. management of chronic neuropathic pain
3. Multimodal therapy (instrumental and pharmacological)
4. therapeutic Cannabis basic concepts for chronic pain.

Teaching methods

Interactive frontal lessons with slides projecting and clinical case movies.

Particular attention will be given to neurophysiopathology and clinical pharmacology notions in pain therapy.

Assessment methods

The class is part of an integrated course. The final exam aims to assess the attainment of the educational objectives exposed during the lessons according to the program of this particular class. To this end, a comprehensive test (quiz) will be used, along with the other components of the integrated course. The examination includes five nine-items multiple-choice questionnaires for each of the course components. The final score is the sum of all correct answers expressed out of the 30s (i.e., from 18/30 to 30/30 cum laude).
