Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student should learn the fundamental authors, the more significant texts and the characteristic feature of the Medieval and Humanistic Literature and Philology. He/she should learn the different kinds of texts in which the forms of reading, reception and transmission of classics take place and their relationship with original works and XIV and XV literary genres. He/she should learn in-depth the main authors of XIV and XV centuries, who will be analyzed in classroom from the philological point of view, together with the acquisition of the other authors and texts that are considered essential for Humanism. At the end of the course the student will be able to read, understand and analyze the prime texts of Middle Age and Humanism; he/she will be able to put them in the right historical and cultural background; he/she will be able to distinguish the main elements of manuscript and printed books; he/she will be able to find his/her own bearings by consulting a scholarly (critical) edition of medieval and humanistic texts; he/she will be able to distinguish the peculiar elements of the exegesis and of the sources of texts.

Course contents

The programm will concern with the the grounds of Medieval and Humanistc Philology and the Knowledge of representativs and exemplar texts (Petrarch, Boccaccio, Alberti, Valla, Poliziano, and so on).

The verification of the learning happens through an oral test in which the student must show to have acquired 1) the ability to read, to understand, to analyze and to comment the texts of the most important authors of the literature and of the medieval and humanistic philology; 2) the ability to recognize the different forms of transmission, edition and comment of texts.

  • If a student will not be able to orientate his own knowledge in the literary 'landscape' of the medieval and humanistic culture and to recognize the main philological features of the XIV and XV principal texts under the program, he will receive a negative evaluation;
  • If a student will be able to catch the main aspects of the works and the authors proposed during the course and to recognize the foundamental issues and the peculiar features of the most important works of the humanistic philology and of its main 'characters', he will receive a positive evaluation;
  • If a student will show a deep knowledge of the texts and of the methodological issues of the humanistic philology, he will receive an excellent evaluation.
  • Students with SLD or temporary or permanent disabilities. It is necessary to contact the relevant University office (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en) with ample time in advance: the office will propose some adjustments, which must in any case be submitted 15 days in advance to the lecturer, who will assess the appropriateness of these in relation to the teaching objectives.
