Learning outcomes
Purpose of the course of "Clinical obstetrics and gynecology and andrology companion animal" is to provide the students with the tools to perform:
- a complete physical examination of the male genitalia and female genitalia in pregnant or not pregnant subject
- medical tests to determine the state of health of an animal
- a therapy.
Course contents
The course is a parte of "CLINICA OSTETRICA E GINECOLOGICA VETERINARIA (C.I.)"
The course will be carried out as follows:
Presentation of the course
Clinical specialist examination
Diseases of not pregnant female genital tract
Diseases of pregnant female genital tract
Diagnosis of pregnancy
Termination of pregnancy
Induction, prevention and suppression ovarian activity
Ovulation and evaluation of optimal time for breeding
Diseases of the male genital tract
Iinfertility in male and female

Teaching methods
The course consists of 24 hours Total 15 hours of frontal lessons and 9 hours of practical classes.
If needed, the frontal and practical lessons can be delivered in remote or mixed mode (remote and presence).
a. lectures
Lectures involve the use of PowerPoint presentations supplemented by numerous clinical cases useful to the description of various diseases. In addition, to improve the understanding, presentations are accompanied by numerous images on different aspects of the pathology or imaging, such as ultrasound or x-rays and cytology.
Frequency to lessons is strongly recommended since the interaction that is established in the classroom facilitates the acquisition, by the student, of the fundamental ability to conduct a clinical examination.
In detail, the lessons will be carried out by treating the diseases with the following scheme:
• Collection of anamnesis
• Symptoms, physical examination and differential diagnosis
• Specific diagnostic techniques
• Definitive diagnosis
• medical and surgical therapies
b. practical lessons
The practical lessons are carried out by dividing the students into four groups, to form groups of about 25 students.
Practical lessons are carried out in the Clinical Skill Lab, using models for the simulation of clinical and surgical procedures. In addition to this, real clinical cases will be discussed and resolved, in the presence of the patient or through the use of PowerPoint presentations.
“To enter in the labs, ambulatory or operating room it is necessary wear white coat. If necessary other PPE will be provided”.
In consideration of the types of activities and teaching methods adopted, the attendance of this training activity requires the performance of all the students of modules 1 and 2 in e-learning mode and the participation in module 3 of specific training on safety and health in the places of study. Information on dates and methods of attendance of module 3 can be consulted in the specific section of the degree program website.
Assessment methods
Oral examination
The purpose of the oral examination is to evaluate the skill of the student to apply his store of knowledge and to correctly perform logical-deductive connections. Usually the oral examination is based on the presentation of a clinical case, possibly supported by the viewing of images and/or videos. The student is asked to obtain the anamnesis, to make a list of differential diagnoses and to discuss what elements are pros and cons of the various hypotheses, and to suggest how to reach the final diagnosis and to decide the treatment plan. During the examination the student have to answer to in-depth questions related to the topic discussed.
Is very important that the student uses a correct lexicon and that he reasons transversally, connecting all the topics of the course and the knowledge from previous courses.
The score can be from 0 (zero) to 30 cum laude. The examination is passed if the student has achieved a score of at least 18 points.
The final score will be defined by an average of the scores of the three modules. Examination commission will include the teachers of the courses that are part of the integrated course.

The evaluation is expressed with a mark out of thirty for the exams. The test is passed with a score of at least 18/30. In the event of maximum marks (30/30), honors can be attributed.
The student has the right to refuse the verbalization of the proposed positive grade at least once (according to the university teaching regulations ART. 16, paragraph 5).
Students with DISABILITIES or SLD who need to adapt to teaching during the lectures or in the final exam, must contact the teacher by email, inserting in C/C the reference staff and the Department contact person, Dr. Fabiana Trombetti.
Teaching tools
The lectures are carried out in the classroom using PC and video projector.
The practical lessons are performed in the Clinical Skill Lab, laboratory, clinic and surgery room using anatomical preparations, models and animals afferent to the Department.
