Learning outcomes

The teaching course "Physiopathology of animal reproduction" aims to provide students the knowledge of the etiopathogenesis of diseases of the reproductive tract in male and female as well as the main causes related to reproductive phases (puberty, pregnancy, parturition, puerperium), besides of infertility causes in domestic species. Student will be able to recognize macroscopic and microscopic aspects, peculiar of diseases of the male and female genital apparatus, using a correct terminology. He will be able to formulate and discuss, from a macroscopic lesion, a list of differential diagnoses and suggest methods to reach a final diagnosis. The skills acquired are preparatory to obstetrical-gynecological and andrological clinic

Course contents

Fisiopatologia della Riproduzione Animale is a part of the C.I. "FISIOPATOLOGIA DELLA RIPRODUZIONE ANIMALE E TECNICHE DI RIPRODUZIONE ASSISTITA". The course consists of: module 1, small animlas (prof. Prof. Daniele Zambelli) and module 2, large animals (professor Prof. Barbara Merlo). Both modules will be carried out as follows:

Course presentation: basic notions for course attendance

Anatomy and physiology hints: basic notions for clinical approach

Collateral exams useful for genital apparatus lesions evaluation

Male and female genital tracts disorders

Infertility

If needed, the frontal and practical lessons can be delivered in remote or mixed mode (remote and presence).

a. Frontal lessons

During lectures, PowerPoint presentations supplemented by numerous clinical cases useful to the description of various diseases will be used. Numerous microscopic and macroscopic images will be presented to support which will be widely commented verbally. For better understanding, constant frequency to these lessons is highly recommended.

In detail, the disease will be treated according to the following scheme:

·   causes of disease: etiologic agent

·   pathogenetic mechanisms

·   pathological micro-macroscopic aspects

b. Practical lessons

In order to carry out practical lessons, students will be divided into 4 groups. Each group will attend the same hours of lesson and will be possibly composed by about 25 students.

The practical lessons are carried out in the clinical skill lab, through the use of models and in the classroom using videos and pictures to stimulate group work, to improve the communication qualities of the students and provide the adequate technical terminology to be used.

“To enter in the labs or ambulatory it is necessary wear white coat. If necessary other PPE will be provided”.

In consideration of the types of activities and teaching methods adopted, the attendance of this training activity requires the performance of all the students of modules 1 and 2 in e-learning mode and the participation in module 3 of specific training on safety and health in the places of study. Information on dates and methods of attendance of module 3 can be consulted in the specific section of the degree program website.

Assessment methods

The course is part of the CI "Fisiopatologia della Riproduzione Animale e Tecniche di Fecondazione Assistita" that includes the courses of "Fecondazione Artificiale e Tecniche di Riproduzione Assistita Veterinaria" and "Andrologia Veterinaria".The teacher verbalizing the CI is Prof. Daniele Zambelli.

The final score will be defined by an average of the scores of the three modules. Examination commission will include the teachers of the courses that are part of the integrated course.

The evaluation test consists in a written examination. During the written test the student has to answer to 24 questions (18 multiple choice questions and 6 short essay questions).

Each multiple choice question has 3 options, and only one is the correct answer. The score can be 0 (zero) or 1. In the short essay questions the score can be from 0 (zero) to 2. The non-answer is considered incorrect (0) in both the type of question.

The time available to the student for the written test is 30 minutes. During the test is not allowed the use of support material as textbooks, notes, and computer media.

Registration on AlmaEsami. Exam on Esami OnLine.

During the day of the examination all 3 modules of the integrated course can be taken (72 questions in 1,5 hours).

The evaluation is expressed with a mark out of thirty for the exams. The test is passed with a score of at least 18/30. In the event of maximum marks (30/30), honors can be attributed.

The student has the right to refuse the verbalization of the proposed positive grade at least once (according to the university teaching regulations ART. 16, paragraph 5).
