98879 - LABORATORIO DI MATERIALI POLIMERICI

Academic Year 2023/2024

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students will have acquired practical laboratory skills in the characterization of certain industrially relevant polymers. Specifically, they will have learned techniques for thermal and mechanical characterization of polymeric materials.

Course contents

1st part: Presentation of the instruments

Thermogravimetric analysis (instrument usage, calibration, thermal stability of two materials in a ramp and isothermal mode) Differential scanning calorimetry (instrument usage, calibration, measurement of a thermoplastic with different heating/cooling cycles) Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis (instrument usage, clamps, measurement of a thermoplastic) Stress-strain test (instrument usage, analysis of materials of significantly different types)

2nd part: Experiments on real samples, specifically selected to demonstrate aspects of structure-property and composition correlation.

Readings/Bibliography

The use of lecture notes and the educational materials provided by the professor will be essential. Additional readings for further exploration are:

Tecniche di Caratterizzazione dei Polimeri a cura di S. Vicini, E. Princi – (2013) – Edizioni Nuova Cultura

Teaching methods

The practical exercises will be conducted at the laboratories of the Polymer Science and Biomaterials research group (Department of Chemistry "Giacomo Ciamician," via Selmi 2, Bologna). The class will be divided into groups of 4-5 students who will collaboratively conduct the exercises under the supervision of the professor. In-class exercises will be carried out during which the students will analyze the results of TGA, DSC, DMTA, and stress-strain analyses, using dedicated free software as well. Local companies will be invited by the professor to hold seminars.

Assessment methods

The assessment of learning takes place through the evaluation of reports presented by the students on specific case studies provided by the professor.

Teaching tools

Presentation of the lesson topics through PC-based video projections. Handouts of the presented topics will be made available in electronic format on https://virtuale.unibo.it/ .
