Learning outcomes

At the end of the laboratory activities, closely connected with the excavation activities; the student knows the characteristics of the classification and drawing of materials, learns the tools for archaeological data archiving and computer management, also taken from ancient archives, and for the analysis and classification of palaeobotanical and palaeoarchaeological finds. They are able to deal with the cataloguing of archaeological material with methodological rigour and using the most up-to-date methods of systematisation and to update their skills by reading the critical literature.

Course contents

The workshop comprises approximately 25 hours of practical activity carried out collectively and 25 hours of individual activity. During the course the knowledge necessary to undertake a systematic study that, starting from the material sources represented by the buildings themselves, then exploits all the other documentary sources; carry out a survey aimed at the restoration project, both at the scale of the entire building and at the detailed scale develop in a correct manner, both from a methodological and operational point of view, the reading and diagnosis of the principal phenomena of degradation and instability of an ancient architectural organism, both at a general and particular level, exploiting in an integrated manner methods of analysis, including advanced ones; define in its complexity the restoration project and, subsequently, the valorisation project, always seeking a constructive and interdisciplinary dialogue with the other experts and the various professional figures involved in the archaeological site.
The integration of this workshop with the Archaeology of Architecture Workshop will allow those who so wish to tackle a single topic within the two courses.

Teaching methods

Each workshop comprises 20/25 face-to-face hours of practical work, managed by individual workshop leaders. To these hours must be added individual tutorials for a total of 2 CFU.

The examination methods allow the assessment of the student's actual achievement of the learning objectives, in particular the ability to apply knowledge and understanding.
