Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student possesses general knowledge related to basic pathologic anatomy, with emphasis on that specific to the musculoskeletal system.

Course contents

Pathologic anatomy laboratory: description of pathology laboratory operation, tissue management, histochemical, immunohistochemical and molecular methods.

Major tissue modifications: hypertrophy, metaplasia, dysplasia, and histological and molecular modifications in carcinogenesis

Structure and function of the bone marrow

Malignant and benign tumors of bone: enchondroma, osteochondroma, osteoid osteoma, nonossifying fibroma, benign giant cell tumor of bone, neurismatic cyst, osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma Ewing's sarcoma

Malignant soft tissue tumors: oncogenesis, classification, cytologic aspects, growth pattern, and stroma characteristics

Histologic changes in arthritis: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis
