Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, the student will have knowledge of the epistemological aspects of nursing, the main models and theories of care, as well as the disciplinary tools and methods of application. They will be familiar with the evolution of the professionalization process, the ethical, deontological, and legislative aspects relevant to professional practice, and the purpose and organization of the National Health System.

Course contents

Concept of care and nursing care, the origin and evolution of the nursing profession (brief overview);

F. Nightingale: her work, thoughts, and influence on the professionalization process of nursing;

The nursing profession in Italy and internationally, the concept of a profession, distinctive characteristics;

The professionalization process of nursing: the evolution of education, professional practice, and relevant regulations, the role and functions of nurses.

The Order of Nurses: purpose and structure, ethical and deontological principles, nursing responsibilities, the Code of Ethics;

Support staff: role, activities, education, nursing supervision, the development of nursing culture: professional associations;

The National Health Service: guiding principles, purpose, organizational structures, Priority Health Problems;

Epistemological aspects of nursing, the metaparadigm of nursing. Analysis and main contents of some theoretical models: V. Henderson, M. Gordon, L.J. Carpenito;

The nursing discipline's methodology, the methodological approach in nursing care: the scientific method, problem-solving, the nursing care process, and its phases. Nursing diagnostic taxonomies;

Purpose and characteristics of nursing documentation, the nursing record, integrated records, guidelines, protocols, procedures.

Teaching methods

Lectures, exercises, comparison, and discussion, cases, videos.

Assessment methods

The learning assessment consists of a written test comprising 30 multiple-choice questions. To pass, the student needs a score of 24/30 or higher. Those who achieve this score or higher can proceed to the subsequent oral test, during which the student will draw two questions related to the covered content. The written test carries a weight of 70%, while the oral test carries a weight of 30% in the final evaluation.

If the student has participated in TBL (Team-Based Learning) sessions, they will receive one point or a fractional point (proportionally) based on the final average score attained at the end of the proposed sessions. This score will be added to the final score.
