Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student has a good knowledge of the main fragrances used to "build" a perfume. Many practical examples will be presented to show a first approach to the art of perfumery, in collaboration with companies in the sector.
Course contents
This elective course will be divided in two parts:
- A presentation of the synthetic molecules (called captives) developed by the companies that produce fragrances. A captive odorant, or captive, is an odorant molecule patented by the originating manufacturer for exclusive use in their own perfumes to protect them from imitation.
- The study and the production of some parfums starting from single ingredients. The following topics will be covered: study of olfactory language, and of raw materials, formulation theory and then laboratory applications.
