Learning outcomes

After attending this course and passing the examination, candidates will be able to apply the adequate statistical techniques to perform a thorough quantitative analysis of economic and business phenomena.

Course contents

Exploratory statistics. Statistical data, classification of variables, table and graphical representations. Mean values and indices of variability, concentration and heterogeneity. Statistical ratios and index numbers.

Elements of probability. Events and logical operations. Combinatorics. Kolmogorov Axioms and basic probability theory. Conditional probability and Bayes formula. Discrete and continuous random variables.

Statistical inference. Population and sample. Statistics and estimators. Confidence intervals for frequency, mean and standard deviation. Testing hypotheses about frequencies and Gaussian parameters. Testing independence.

Sampling methods. Sampling probabilities. Simple random sampling and probabilised sampling. Stratified and cluster sampling.

Teaching methods

Front lessons with examples and esercises.

Assessment methods

Written test, usually formed by three exercises. The first exercise deals with exploratory statistics, the second one with basic probability or interval estimation, the last one with hypotesis testing.

Oral test (about 20 minutes) related to the whole course program.

Teaching tools

A certain quantity of teaching sheets will be available to the students. These sheets will be uploaded to Virtuale.unibo platform.
