Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student will acquire a basic knowledge of the main approaches developed within the discipline for the analysis of political phenomena; will know the conceptual and theoretical tools for the study and understanding of political processes and institutions; will learn how to analyse the main aspects of the functioning of political systems in a comparative perspective.

Course contents

Topics that will be analyzed in the course are the following: the scientific study of politics; scope and meaning of "comparative politics"; the modern state and the first democratization; transitions to democracy; varieties of democracy; authoritarian and "hybrid" regimes; elections and electoral systems; parties and party systems; how governments form in parliamentary, presidential and mixed democracies; institutional veto players; majoritarian and consensual models of democracy.

Teaching methods

The course will consist of lectures and an in-depth seminar on the upcoming European elections to be held in the second part.
Students are encouraged to read the chapters before class.
Active participation of students in the seminar is expected.

Assessment methods

Learning will be assessed by means of two written tests: one mid-course test on the first part of the programme, one end-of-course test on the second part.
The details of the tests will be specified at the beginning of the course. The final mark is the average of the marks obtained in the two tests. Those who have obtained a mark of 18 or above in the first test are eligible for the second test.

Those who fail one of the two intermediate examinations will have to take the entire test  on the dates set for the exams.


All students are free to opt for the exam on the entire syllabus.
