Learning outcomes

At the end of the module the student has basic knowledge on cardiovascular diseases, with particular reference to the implications of podiatric interest

Course contents

Meaning of vital signs monitoring, and cardiovascular implications in the detection of altered values (heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, volume of urine output, body temperature).
Semeiotics of cardiovascular pathologies of the lower limbs.
Diagnostics of chest pain of a cardiac nature: stable angina, unstable angina and heart attack; non-ischaemic cardiovascular chest pain (dissecting aortic aneurysm, pericarditis).
Pathophysiology of stable angina and acute coronary syndromes. Clinic: stable angina and acute coronary syndromes. Principles of therapy: stable angina and acute coronary syndromes.
Chronic heart failure and acute heart failure (acute pulmonary oedema). Causes, clinic and principles of therapy. Differential diagnosis of bilateral edema of the lower limbs.
Pulmonary embolism (etiology, clinic, diagnosis, and prevention)
Valvulopathies (etiology, pathophysiology). Cardiomyopathies (classification). Endocarditis. Pericarditis.
normal EKG. Meaning of P, QRS, T waves and ST segment.
Arrhythmias (classification: bradyarrhythmias and tachyarrhythmias). Atrial fibrillation. Malignant ventricular tachyarrhythmias
Instrumental examinations in cardiology (ECG, stress tests, ultrasound, scintigraphy, angiography, magnetic resonance, new endovascular imaging techniques) indications for their use and limits of these techniques.
Prevention in CV pathologies: role of the podiatrist.
