Learning outcomes

At the end of the module the student possesses the knowledge, within his competence, of the pathophysiology of pain, of pain assessment, of pharmacological and non-pharmacological supports in pain treatment, of titration of opiates, of aids in pain therapy.

Course contents

The course aims to provide the student with knowledge on: Principles of pain management and palliative care. Palliative care networks. Pain diagnosis and assessment. Principles of pathophysiology of pain. Pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to pain management. The WHO analgesic scale. The opioids. The side effects. Strategies in the management of pain and side effects. Neuropathic pain. Episodic pain. Rotation of opioids. The difficult pain. Other symptoms besides pain. palliative sedation. adjuvant drugs. The regulations. Ethical aspects. Concurrent and end-of-life palliative care.
