Learning outcomes

The course of History of Contemporary Philosophy 2 aims at widening and exploring in-depth the same arguments and problems treated in the course of History of Contemporary Philosophy 1. Through the reading of texts and the involvement of students for comments and interpretations, the course focuses on the central themes that characterize twentieth century philosophy and culture. The aim is to encourage the acquisition of tools useful to understand some of the most important philosophical works of our time, as to increase the students’ critical capacity and awareness.

Course contents

Philosophy and Politics in Croce and Gentile

Benedetto Croce and Giovanni Gentile are among the protagonists of Italian culture in the first half of the 20th century. The course on History of Contemporary Philosophy 2 will be dedicated to their philosophical and political thought.

After a few introductory lessons, during which the political and cultural situation in Italy between the 19th and 20th centuries will be reconstructed, some fundamental aspects of Croce's and Gentile's reflections will be examined. These include the relationship between history and history of philosophy, their reception of the philosophies of Hegel and Marx, and the role of fascism in Italy's history.
