Learning outcomes

- Use of fundamental translation tools (grammars and dictionaries of different types, and corpora of parallel and/or comparable texts)

- application of methods (micro- and macro-structuring, drafting and revision of the target text) in the translation from Italian into Chinese

- identification and implementation of the fundamental translation strategies most suited to the communicative/operational functions of the texts to be translated

Course contents

In the first part of the course, the main task is the translation of sentences and short texts, which are selected on the basis of the most salient syntactic differences between Italian and Chinese. In addition, detailed information regarding complex sentences and punctuation marks of the Chinese language will be provided.
The second part of the course will be dedicated to the translation of texts from the area of Tourism. Students will put into practice the translation strategies and solutions discussed in the first part of the course, by adapting them to the specific cultural context and text genre.

Compulsory attendance rate: 70%

Texts for translation will be shown and shared during the lessons and will be available on Virtual on a weekly basis. Additional online tools and materials will be introduced during the semester.

Teaching methods

During the course, the students will be invovled actively in the analysis of the source text and in the translation process. The students will also complete the individual translation assignments, to be sent to the teacher every two weeks for correction. 

Assessment methods

The final exam consists of a translation assignment from Italian into Chinese relating to the topic studied in class. Only paperback dictionaries and digital tools indicated by the lecturer are allowed during the test.

Duration: 2 hours.

 

Learning assessment scale

30-30L

Excellent command of the target language as well as translation skills.


27-29
Good command of the target language, with only minor errors, and adequate translation skills.

24-26

The student acquired the main grammatical topics, but with some evident errors and lacks.


21-23

Major difficulties in language use and in the implementation of translation strategies.



18- 20

The test shows a basic level of linguistic knowledge, with major grammatical, lexical or phonological errors and evident lacks in translation skills.


< 18 insufficient
Basic knowledge has not been acquired, the student is unable to complete the test.
