Learning outcomes

The student is able to identify possible relevant qualified professional outlets. S/he is able to apply advanced ICT tools and innovative techniques to the professional practice, to transfer the acquired knowledge and skills to different working sectors and to evaluate the results of his/her internship for the purpose of his/her dissertation. The student is able to apply the acquired knowledge, skills and code of conduct in the field of translation and interpreting. S/he is able to integrate the knowledge and skills already acquired during his/her training with those gained in the working environment.

Course contents

The aim of the curricular traineeship in the MA in Conference Interpreting is to provide an opportunity for students to experience on-the-job training outside the classroom to strengthen their specific professional skills and enrich their learning and educational process. The traineeship cannot and will not replace the professional activities of graduates or create distortions in the labour market.

The traineeship is carried out without exception within the framework of agreements signed directly between the university and the institution/company concerned.

Applications for traineeships are admissible for the following activities: language assistance at international conferences or meetings (e.g. language assistance to foreign guests), consecutive or whispered interpretation (chuchotage) in situations that are not highly formal or official. Simultaneous interpreting may only be admissible in exceptional cases. In this case interpreting users must be informed that interpreting is provided by students who have not yet completed their training.

The traineeship activities for interpreting students may not involve more than 10 hours of written translation (10% of the total traineeship hours).

As a general rule, national and international organizations and associations which are no profit and essentially act on a voluntary basis, as well as all organizers of events or initiatives with humanitarian aims who regularly use volunteer interpreters, may host student trainees. Traineeships may also be offered in private companies, again under an agreement, provided that the collaboration with the traineeship commission is not one-off and that the traineeship represents a first step towards paid professional activities.

Finally, traineeship opportunities may be offered by all those who organize initiatives within the Department or in which the Department participates directly or through sponsorship.

Organization of meetings with students to present traineeship activities. Interviews before and after traineeship to provide information and receive feedback on the traineeship once finished.

Checking all necessary documents, number of hours, languages and activities carried out by trainees and evaluation by companies/organizations.
