Learning outcomes

The student should be: conversant with the necessary instruments (elements of grammar and different types of dictionaries) and the basic methods of translation (macro and micro structures of texts, how to draw up the target texts); should be able to apply these in practice to a variety of text types; should be able to identify and apply the appropriate basic translational strategies to the texts to be translated

Course contents

The students will practice translating texts of several different types from Italian into German, improving their command of the German language and their capacities for source text analysis and target text rendering.

Particular attention will be paid to the use mono- and bilingual corpora.

Teaching methods

Lectures, exercises, group work

Texts will be translated individually as well as in workshops. Group works will be assigned as part of a complexer translation project.

Assessment methods

Commented translation or post-editing of a translation of own choice: a text up to 150 words will be chosen by the student and translated into German (with glossary and comment) and delivered to the teacher before the exam at the end of the course. The text to translate has to be approved by the teacher.

Assessment criteria:

linguistic, stylistic and communicative quality of the translated texts, level of equivalence and communicative adequacy, proper knowledge of translation strategies and techniques.

Final Assessment:

The final test of the course will focus on the ability to translate short authentic texts, to adopt an appropriate translation strategies, to evaluate the output of automatic translation tools. Furthermore,  the student has to show that he or she possesses adequate knowlegde of online-resources for translators.

30-30L: Excellent level.

27-29: Good level. The candidate shows a solid command of the required skills and competences.

24–26: Generally sound level. The candidate displays significant shortcomings, indicating a reasonable command of the required skills and competences.

21-23: Adequate level. The candidate displays significant shortcomings and only an adequate command of the required skills and competences.

18–20: Minim level. The candidate only meets the minimum level required and shows a minimal command of the required skills and competences.

The final vote is the average between the final translation of active translation and passive translation

Teaching tools

Microsoft Teams, video projector, computers with Internet connection, corpora, online vocabolaries, special software tools for text analysis, terminology data bases, video streaming of TV broadcastings. Additional software and tools shall be indicated. This course shall be managed within the Moodle content management system (Virtuale). Students need to register.
