Learning outcomes

After completing the course, students achieve advanced awareness of the relevance of the comparative approach to the analysis of European religions and those located in areas between the Near East, East and South Asia, Africa and the Americas; they are able to analyze religious phenomena combining legal studies and social sciences. They acquire the skills to conduct field research by applying techniques of collection, interpretative analysis and processing of empirical data to convey the results obtained.

Course contents

In the first part of the course the common characteristics of the different religious legal systems and the differences with the secular legal systems will be analyzed.
In the second part, we will examine the characteristics and historical evolution of some religious rights (canonical, Jewish, Islamic) and some particular issues, relevant for the life of the faithful and for their interaction with state legal systems (marriage, relationships between the sexes, religious rules in health and food).

The lessons will be supported by the aid of audio-video materials, power point presentations, all regularly uploaded to the e-learning platform. Active participation through interventions and questions is strongly recommended.
