Course contents
Techniques and tools of observation in early childhood educational services
The workshop focuses on the meaning and importance of observation as a professional tool for the educator in early childhood educational services.
In particular, through reference to concrete cases and examples and the proposal of observational activities supported by the use of printed, visual and audiovisual materials, the workshop aims to promote:
- a reflection on the possible biases implied in observation and the differences between spontaneous/occasional and systematic observation;
- awareness of the different aspects involved in designing a systematic observation plan;
- the knowledge and critical analysis of different procedures, techniques and tools of systematic observation;
- the ability to identify, in relation to different observational procedures and tools, criteria and operational strategies to increase validity and reliability of observational data;
- the acquisition of skills related to the use of specific observation tools.

Materials and bibliographical references will be provided during the workshop.
Teaching methods
Student participation through discussion and individual/group work will be promoted during the workshop.
Assessment methods
Assessment methods will focus on monitoring the level of student participation and analyzing the tasks carried out during the workshop.
