Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, the successful student has the ability to apply the methods of differential and integral calculus, to plot the graph of functions, and to find and classify critical points of functions of two variables.

Course contents

Real-valued functions of a real variable. Limits and continuity. Derivative and related applications. Relative and absolute maxima and minima. Quantitative study of the graph of a function. Integrals. Elements of multivariable calculus: vector-valued functions of a real variable. Real-valued functions of a vector (or of many variables). If time permits: elementary differential equations.

Teaching methods

Assessment methods

2-3 hour written exam, with voluntary oral exam. The grade obtained in this module (in the scale 18-32) will concur to a weighted average with the grade obtained in the linear algebra module (the two weights are, respectively, 8/14 and 6/14). If the weighted average is bigger than 30.85, the final grade for the “integrated course” MATHEMATICS (I.C.) will be “30 cum laude”. If not, the final grade will be the weighted average (rounded to the nearest integer not exceeding 30).
