27928 - Laboratory (1) (LM) (G.E)

Academic Year 2021/2022

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Italian Studies, European Literary Cultures, Linguistics (cod. 9220)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the laboratory the student will be able to identify the main textual problems in relation to the forms and functions of theatrical writing: characters, dialogue and caption. It will also be able to include the relationships between the literary text and the dramatic text, paying attention to the extra-textual components (scenography, lighting, music).

Course contents

«Usciti in fantasia» with Luciano De Crescenzo.

From the narrative text to the theatrical text.

«In Naples, “uscito in fantasia” (to be translated broadly "out in fantasy") is a gentle, and perhaps even poetic, way to say that a man has gone mad» [L. De Crescenzo]. It is evident that in this case the expression "going out in fantasy" (“uscire di fantasia”) does not indicate "going out" of the head, losing the light of reason. Yet - explains De Crescenzo - "uscito in fantasia" is a phrase that insinuates "doubt", which declares a certain perplexity towards the "real”. It can even be said that this linguistic formula hides something of enlightened flexibility, of superhuman pretension, which is in essence the force that carries those who want to "go beyond", those who try to create art, as the writer does for example.The Laboratory of Italian Theater Literature (A.Y. 2020/2021) looks at the fantasy and dramatic character of Luciano De Crescenzo's fiction with the aim of making participants acquire literary and expressive tools for a dramatic purpose.The passage from the novel to the theatre will be approached taking into account the main textual problems in relation to the forms and functions of space, time, dialogue, characters and caption. Students will create a collective writing exercise, forming working groups with the final goal of creating a theatrical text and an original artistic work. The writing exercise aims to enhance the dialogue and the exchange of literary knowledge, keeping the link with one's own roots and cultural traditions open. The passage from novels to theatre, from fiction to dramatic transposition, will be discussed in class starting from four works by:

  1. L. De Crescenzo, Alfonso Carotenuto, in ID., Usciti in fantasia. Nove racconti, Milano, Mondadori, 1994, pp. 13-19;
  2. L. De Crescenzo, Tonino Capone, in ID., Usciti in fantasia. Nove racconti, Milano, Mondadori, 1994, pp. 91-100;
  3. L. De Crescenzo, Il dubbio, Milano, Mondadori, 1992.

Teaching methods

The aim of the Laboratory is to elaborate unique acts, monologues or experimental and intercultural dramatic texts, in which the imagination, expressive capacity, or the aesthetics of the students' writing will act. The course aims to encourage discussion between the participants, promoting collaboration, sharing and collective enhancement of “artistic creativity”. After several introductory lessons on the general notions of theaterlogy, each working group will be introduced to the construction of the text, creating its own dramaturgical “object” from the analyzed texts: plot, dialogues, captions, characters.

Assessment methods
