81871 - Sports Anthropometry

Academic Year 2021/2022

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Sciences and Techniques of Sports Activities (cod. 9069)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the students are able to determine the physical characteristics necessary to optimize athletic performance at a high level and the influence of amateur and non-amateur sport activities on physical structure in the developmental, adult and old age classes. By means of practice, the students are able to measure the fundamental anthropometric dimensions and those useful for the physical structure and body composition valuation.

Course contents

Talent identification and selection. Biological age determination and application in sport field. Techniques of stature prediction in adult age. Maturation and performance: variation in performance associated with maturation. Genetics aspects of anthropometric body characters and performance. Anthropomorphic factors which determine the success of an athlete; potential population, selective pressure, z-score and use of multivariate techniques; anthropometric aspects of selection; athletes anthropometric profiling; examples of morphological optimization. Physical characteristics of high level athletes. Body proportions, body composition, somatotype and performance: examples of morphological optimization.

Assessment methods

The assessment of learning occurs through the oral examination, which has the objective of verifying the acquisition of skills and abilities expectations as detailed in the objectives of the course and will be deemed superseded by the correct answer three main questions related to topics during the course.

Through the oral exam will be assessed: 1) the mastery of the concepts and methods covered during lessons and practices 2) the ability to critically elaborate the topics addressed, 3) the clarity of exposure and the ability to use the specific languages of the discipline 4) the ability to build a didactic path on a chosen topic.
