Learning outcomes

Students will enhance their critical thinking, time- and group- management skills, and creativity by analysing existing materials, planning and creating new activities, and presenting their group works. 

Course contents

Literary texts within multilingual classes. Teaching Italian as a L2 through literature at primary school.

The course will deal with the main theoretical principles and teaching methods regarding the teaching of Italian as a Second Language (L2) through literary texts within multilingual classes at primary school.

The course will focus on the following topics: the structure of the teaching unit, and the appropriate methodologies for its different phases; the mixed ability classes with some inclusive teaching strategies; the social mediation methods (peer education and cooperative learning); the use of digital resources for the development of writing skills.


Bibliographical references will be provided throughout the duration of the course.

In each lesson materials and slides prepared by the teacher will be made available for students. Further reading will be suggested during the lessons.

Teaching methods

The course will last 16 hours (four 4 hour lessons) and be both theoretical and practical.

Every lesson will be divided into three parts: a short theoretical framework, the analysis of existing teaching materials, and the creation of new activities based on similar inputs (short stories, picture books) by small groups of students. Finally, students will present their group works, and receive a general feedback.

The use of digital devices is highly encouraged. Students will be required to bring their own laptops to class.

Assessment methods

The final evaluation will be based on:

- course attendance, participation, and cooperation during the lessons;

- a final paper (max. 2-3 pages) where students will be asked to reflect on the connections between the theoretical principles, the teaching methods, and the current legislation for the Italian primary school.

Grading will be as follows:

+1 (very good)

0 (good)

-1 (sufficient)

rejected. In the case of rejection the course should be repeated.
