Learning outcomes

The seminars are designed to introduce students to some specialized aspects of the training. The seminars are related to the deepening of advanced topics, in particular taught by specialists or professionals of some disciplines of the learning activities. The seminars will deal with the themes connected with the areas of learning: computer science; literary, linguistic, historical/cultural and related to the arts in the digital context; transversal: economics, law and communication.

DSEL Digital Scholarly Editing Lab. Authorship and Censorship in the Italian Renaissance.

The Case of Benedetto Varchi’s Storia Fiorentina (1548-1565)



DSEL (Digital Scholarly Editing Lab) - in partnership with Prof. Dario Brancato (Concordia University) for students of DHDK and Italianistica – is aimed to develop a Digital Project on Benedetto Varchi’s Florentine History (VASTO PROJECT), a history of Renaissance Florence, unfinished at the author's death in 1565 and published only in 1721 in a censored form. Florentine History is a crucial text to understand the interaction between power and culture in Italy in the height of the Renaissance. At the end of the Lab students will build a digital prototype of Florentine History; Seminar/Laboratory will allow them: 1. to think about the need to recover the original will of the author in relationship to censored text, to represent the interventions of censorship and rewritings made by the client of the History, Cosimo Ist, and 2. to represent, in a digital setting (maps, timeline, external links): places, facts, protagonists of the Renaissance in Florence from 1527 to 1530, vively represented in this digital prototype.

The Laboratory, which does not require previous knowledge of XML/TEI, is aimed at students of the course of DHDK and other Master course interested in Digital Philology, and will be activated with a minimum of 10 participants. To register, please send an email to Prof.ssa Paola Italia (paola.italia@unibo.it) within fifteen days of the start date of the seminar, sending your CV with the list of exams (with mark).

Assessment methods


At the end of the course, participants must create their edition of VASTO Project with XML/TEI, upload it in EVT2, and send it ten days before the examination for evaluation.
