Academic Year 2021/2022

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Statistics, Economics and Business (cod. 8876)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student knows the statistical methods for process control, designing and realizing quality improvement activities. In particular, the student is able to design factorial experiments and propose appropriate solutions for process development and improvement.

Course contents

1. Quality improvement in the modern Businnes Environment (2 hours)
-Meaning of "quality" and "quality improvement"
-Describing variation in a manufacturing process

2. Statistical Process Control (14 hours)
-Methods and Philosphy of Statistical Process Control
-Shewhart control charts: control charts for variables; control charts for attributes.
-The role of the power function and the Average Run Length (ARL) function on the design of the control charts.
-CUSUM and EWMA control charts
-Exercises with R

3. Process Capability Analysis (4 hours)
-Assessing performances and capability of manufacturing processes
-The most used capability indices: Cp, Cpk, Cpm

5. Fundmentals of the Design of Experiments DOE (6 hours)
-Experiments with Random Factors
-Measurement Systems Capability Study
-Exercises with R

Compulsory readings:
Montgomery, D. C. (2009). Introduction to Statistical Quality Control, Sixth Edition. John Wiley & Sons.

Lecture notes and exam simulations are available on the platform IOL (https://iol.unibo.it/ )

Teaching methods

Lectures and computer exercises with Excel and R

Assessment methods

The assessment aims to evaluate the achievement of the following learning objectives:

  • the knowledge of the fundamental aspects of statistical quality control
  • the ability in designing statistical process control activities, acceptance sampling plans, process capability analysis and design of experiments

In order to take the exam registration is mandatory through Almaesami platform.

The exam is written, and it contains 3 or 4 exercises to complete in two hours.

The evaluation is expressed as a grade of out of 30.

The maximum grade is reached by performing all the assigned exercises perfectly.

The exam is passed if the student reaches a total score of 18/30.

Sufficiency (18/30) can be reached by performing at least half of the assigned exercises.

During the exam it is not allowed to consult textbooks or notes. A pocket calculator is necessary.

Teaching tools

Slides in pdf and R-code for the examples in the computer lab.
