Learning outcomes
The course aims at giving methods and technical skills to understand the buildings from the technical, functional, and morphological point of view.
At the end of the course the students will be able to know the main construction and environmental principles of the buildings, and split up the building system into technological units and technical elements, knowing the materials and the functions related to each of them.
The course offers the basis for the following phase of building design.
Course contents
Historic masonry buildings: building principles, types of masonry, timber floors, timber roofs, timber trusses, arches and masonry vaults.
XX century framed buildings: elements of the theory of elastic structures, reinforced concrete frames construction, foundations, horizontal structures, opaque and transparent claddings.
Decomposition of the building system. Building requirements and performances.
Current construction systems: ordinary masonry and reinforced masonry, reinforced concrete construction, timber building construction. Vertical and horizontal building enclosures, internal partitions.
