67833 - Multidisciplinary Seminar for Specific Studies

Academic Year 2021/2022

  • Moduli: Piera Versura (Modulo 1) Piera Versura (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Biomedical Laboratory techniques (cod. 8484)

Learning outcomes

At the end of Module 1 lessons, the student acquires the skills for a critical understanding of the rationale, ideation, and conduction of clinical trials.

At the end of Module 2 lessons, the student acquires the knowledge on technical and analytical procedures related to specific biological samples (tears, aqueous and vitreous humor, saliva, synovial fluid, cerebrospinal fluid, sweat, hairs), with particular reference to the application of Point of Care Test (POCT) equippments.

Course contents

The seminar consists of two modules, carried out by the same teacher.

Module 1 deals with the basic topics related to the research methodology, with particular reference to clinical research.

Module 2 deals with the topics related to micro-sampling and analytical techniques in biological samples contiguous to the site of disease, and which can be taken in minimum amounts. A particular reference is given to the use of Point of Care Test (POCT) equippments.
The topics of the seminar program are summarized below:

- Introduction to research methodology and definitions - Science and scientific methods

- The phases of the scientific research - The research question

- Literature review - Databases and bibliographic research

- The architecture of clinical research - study design types

- Objective of the study - Study population - Sample size - Definition of the end point - Construction of a database

- Experimental research - Stages of drug development - Randomized controlled trials

- Ethical aspects of experimentation - Function of the Ethics Committees

- The clinical protocol - Good Clinical Practice - Conducting clinical research - Regulatory bodies

- The scientific article

- Anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry of: tears, aqueous and vitreous humor, saliva, synovial fluid, cerebrospinal fluid, sweat, hair
