Learning outcomes
The course will give competencies and understanding in medicinal, food and agrochemical organic products.
The student can apply his/her skills to chemical areas of great economic importance in local and national environment.
Course contents
Prerequisites:
A good knowledge of functional groups and reactivity in organic chemistry is strongly required. Basic knowledge of simple aminoacids, carbohydrates, and lipids is recommended.
Course content:
Description of properties and function of selected chemical compounds in medicinal and agro-food chemistry.
Module 1
Medicinal Chemistry
What is an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API)
Analysis of the drug discovery & development processes
Pharmacokinetics, dynamics, and safety.
Case history: antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance phenomena, antiviral, and antipain compounds.
Module 2
Agrochemicals
Pesticides, herbicides, plant groth regulators, and environmental issues.
Sustainability, human & environmental safety and social impact.
Case studies.
Food Chemistry
Selected natural products in food and transformations.
Antioxidants, food preservation, flavoring.

Teaching methods
Lessons consist in oral sessions that include presentations of contents by current literature and discussions.
An active student participation to the discussion session is strongly recommended to develop problem solving skills.
Assessment methods
Module 1. Viva voce examination (English or Italian on request) on the course topics.
Module 2. Oral presentation of a chosen topic + Written test 5 multiple choice questions. In alternative: Written test 5 open questions + Written test 5 multiple choice questions.
Teaching tools
Oral lectures and computer presentations that could be retrieved on the web platform Virtuale.
Take notes during lectures is mandatory.
