Learning outcomes

At the end of the module the student knows the fundamental notions on the structure and behavior of materials of specific interest as well as on the mechanisms of degradation in the specific conditions of use; also knows the materials used for the design and manufacture of orthoses and prostheses and their interactions with the human body; is able to choose the most suitable material in the profession.

Course contents

The topics of the course program are briefly listed below

- EU regulation notes of medical devices 2017/745

- introductory notes on materials science and technology.

- structure and bonds of atoms, crystalline and amorphous structure of materials, solidification and crystalline imperfections

- biocompatibility and biomaterials, definitions and applications.

- characteristic properties of metallic, polymeric, ceramic and composite materials

- metallic materials: processing, production and heat treatments.

- polymeric materials: polymerization, processing, deformation and stiffening.

- composite materials: fibers, manufacturing processes.

- breakage, degradation, corrosion and protection of materials.

- the choice of materials in the design.

- tools for a critical choice of the most suitable material for practical applications in orthopedics.

Test with open questions on the program carried out. Oral exam based on a thesis developed on a topic chosen by the student.
