Learning outcomes

The student, at the end of the course, must have a knowledge of the welfare good practices currently used in different regions such as Emilia Romagna, Lombardy and Veneto; - a knowledge of the welfare system evolution with particular reference to adolescence; - a knowledge of the reorganization problems of services and new professions; - the ability to apply the methodological and theoretical frameworks learned to the contexts of the services with specific reference to the reading of the needs of substance users and planning.

Course contents

Students will be driven by an interactive path of knowledge and reflection on the design of the treatment of pathological addictions.

At the end of the course students will have understood, more generally, the main theoretical and methodological references of the social, educational, health and social interventions, both in the national and in the European context, comparing also processes, models and operational practices currently used in the public-private system.

In detail, the first module program concerns:

- The health and social policy interventions in the field of addiction treatment

- The European practises in the field of treatment and prevention of pathological addiction

- In summary, the reference legislation in the field of treatment of Pathological Addiction.

- The comparison with the European practises in the field of treatment and prevention of pathological addiction.

- The comparative study of different intervention models and tools to define and evaluate treatment results.

- In general, the main structures of the welfare system.

- The principles of the functioning of the welfare system and the roles and competences of public and private stakeholders (subsidiarity, institutional accreditation, social and health interventions).

At the end of the second module the student will be able to make a careful analysis of the demand of users with pathological addiction implementong interventions to take care of the problematic situation. The second module will focus on communicative, relational and group techinques useful in the treatment of different forms of pathological addiction, from alcoholism to cocaine and heroin dependence, to poly-consumption and double diagnosis, to behavioural addictions.

Some project works will be discussed and problematized. Part of the module will focus on design (how to write a project, strengths and weaknesses) and part will focus on the skills needed to work effectively with substance users.

- The planning of interventions for people with pathological addiction

- Reflections on proposed individualised projects

- Simulations of interviews in the help relationship

- Group experiences in multi-professional teams

Teaching methods

Frontal lessons, case studies, laboratory activities of simulation of planning of interventions, study and reporting of good practices, simulated interviews, experiential groups.

Assessment methods

Oral exam with 3 questions on the texts of the bibliography to take the exam.

Teaching tools

In addition to the texts indicated and the teacher's slides, audio-visual supports and iconographic sources may be used. In addition, the teachers will be assisted in teaching by Prof. Andrea Ascari who will lead in co-presence or directly, workshops of deepening.
