Course contents

Quand l'Europe parlait français.

The Kingdom of France from the Valois to the Bourbons.

The course aims to train a critical awareness in the acquisition and use of the bibliography, in the research and development of sources, through a broader view of the European continent

The genesis and evolution of European civilization in the modern age will be analyzed through the perspective of the history of France, one of the great monarchies that most determined its destiny.

From Francis I of Valois to Louis XVI of Bourbon, all the sovereigns who succeeded have shaped their life in the image of the court and the politics of the kingdom, extending their influence far beyond national borders.

The theme of sovereignty, centralization of power and cultural policy, addressed in its theoretical and symbolic aspects, will be central, precisely in consideration of the exemplariness offered by the figure of Louis XIV.

The general picture of the French culture and society of the Grand siècle, allows us to grasp, on the one hand, some specificities of French civilization, and, on the other, some fundamental links between movements of thought, political-social phenomena, linguistic literary and artistic that defined the formation of a taste and an idea of culture, fundamental to the construction of modern French and European cultural identity.

Facing here one of the crucial junctions of the history of France, in the next module (Politics and historiography of the modern age) it will be better understood how the renewal proposed by the Nouvelle Histoire starts from that new conception of royalty that Marc Bloch inaugurated with his Rois thaumaturges in 1924.

Teaching methods

Lectures and seminar activity.

Assessment methods

The exam consists in an oral interview, lasting an average of 20-30 minutes.

During the examination will be evaluated in-depth knowledge of the issues dealt with in each of the essential texts for the completeness of the program; the ability to recognize, in every text, the sources used and historiographical reconstruction; the expressive mastery and use of a specific language.

The lack of knowledge of one of the two texts in the program will cause a negative rating.

Gaps in knowledge of the texts in the program, poor ability to recognize sources and historiographical reconstruction, very inappropriate language will involve an assessment of not more than sufficiency.

Knowledge mostly mechanical and / or mnemonics, capacity of synthesis and analysis limited, proper language, but not always appropriate, provide for a fair rating.

Full knowledge of the texts, good capacity of synthesis and analysis, fully valid and appropriate language will allow a good to excellent.

The present course (6CFU) is a component of the Integrated Course History of the Modern Age C.I. (LM). If the student has the Integrated Course (12CFU) in his / her study plan, the final grade will result from the arithmetic average of the marks obtained in the two components (History of Europe in the Modern Age 1, and Politics and Historiography of the Modern Age 2).
