Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students: - know the fundamental features of the modern and contemporary History of Political Thought, - know the main forms of political communication and understand the complex relationships between ideas and facts, - know the most important political doctrines and are able to critically analyze them in connection with the relevant cultural, institutional, historical and social context,- is able to understand the most important political and institutional changes in Western history.

Course contents

Through the methodological tools provided by constitutional history and history of political concepts, the course aims to reconstruct the history of modern and contemporary political thought, highlighting both its continuities and ruptures. Modern political concepts are then analyzed according to the following periodization: the phase of their first emergence in seventeenth century, the age of revolutionary change, and finally the current global transition. A particular attention will be paid to the following concepts: politics, state, government, citizenship, tolerance, revolution, people, freedom, society, colonization, slavery.

Assessment methods

Students regularly attending the course : the exam is composed of a middle term written text and a final written text to check the knowledge and understanding of the issues analysed during the course.

Non attending students : the exam is composed of a written text and an oral examination which will take place during the day officially established for the exam. The written text will be focused on the institutional part of the course (R. Gherardi (ed), La politica e gli Stati , Roma, Carrocci, 2011).
