Learning outcomes

The student will acquire theoretical and practicals knowledges on how to perform a breeding soundness evaluation both in male and female livestock, pregnancy diagnosis, diagnosis and treatment of the most common diseases of pregnancy, parturition and postpartum period.

Course contents

Clinical and collateral evaluations of female reproductive efficiency, criteria for the evaluation of female fertility, herd fertility. Embryonic and fetal development, maternal recognition of pregnancy, placentation and criteria for classification. Lenght of gestation, associated and specifics pregnancy proteins, clinical, instrumental and laboratory pregnancy diagnosis, number of fetus – twins. Presentation, position and posture during pregnancy and parturition, obstetric examination. Initiation of parturition, induction of parturition. The puerperium: uterine involution, resumption of ovarian cyclicity, elimination of bacterial contamination, endometrial rigeneration. Abnormalities of fetal fluids and membranes, disorders of pregnancy of fetal and maternal origin, disorders of gestation lenght : diagnosis and treatment. Obstetric equipments and manipulations, fetal and maternal dystocia: causes and treatment, diseases incidental to parturition : diagnosis and treatment. Abnormalities of sexual behaviour, diseases of mating ability and in livestock: diagnosis and teatment. Diseases of penis, prepuce, testes, scrotum. Testicular termoregulation and “ summer infertility” in livestock : diagnosis and treatment. Diseases of the accessory genital organs : diagnosis and treatment.
