33155 - Sustainable Design

Academic Year 2017/2018

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Cesena
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Architecture (cod. 0881)

Learning outcomes

The aim of this module is to develop the students' awareness of all possible design strategies based on the complexity of the environmental variables. Students will be guided in a design process where attention to context and the integration of passive design solutions are a priority. Both individual and team work is used to develop independent judgment, improving the communication skills, necessary for the illustration of the design solutions.

Course contents

The student learns how to reflect on the close relationships between technique and form in architecture and to experiment the various options in the project, that this relationship implies in terms of formal expression of the project and of the language. He deepens the sense of the link that every architecture establishes with the built environment of the city, from which he keep motivations and to which gives it new interpretations.

The core contents of the studio are addressed to energy efficient and sustainable architecture, aiming to control the process as whole in relation with boundary conditions and complex contexts. The course aims at providing specific competences in the following fields:the relationship between technique and form in consideration of the decisive role of the building envelope - both in the upgrading of existing buildings as well as in a new design - as a physical place where the major values of energy performance and formal expression are focused; the relationship between the individual expressive form of architecture and the formal rules that the urban context accumulates, elaborates and imposes.

Teaching methods

The activity will develop according to a schedule organized by progress reports (SAL). Each SAL will be mainly dedicated to the resolution of a specific design aspect.

The SAL consists in the writing of a sinthesis document to be delivered at set dates and then told to the other students and lecturers of the Laboratory, to submit it to a critical review (design review).

Assessment methods

A series of seminar is planned to assess the learning and working-out of design. A constant check of the theoretical knowledge useful for the selection of building systems and technologies will be carried out during the Laboratory activity.

The final project will be based on the reworking and systematization of aspects progressively dealt with during the Laboratory. The individual final check will consist in a discussion of project works produced during the Lab and it will include the discussion both of the main theoretical issues involved by the theme assigned and the topics dealt with during the Laboratory.

Teaching tools

The regular presence of the students at the Laboratory is required, to allow an efficient management of the work progression in each phase of the building design . The Department library is a useful support for specific documentation and for in-depth studies . Department of Architecture and School of Engineering and Architecture equipments will be used (overhead projectors, videoprojectors, electronic media, data carriers ).
