Prevention at the workplace

Risk factors in the working environment

Occupational Medicine: general background and evolution of working conditions.

Preventable pathologies. Occupational accidents and diseases.

Occupational Medicine and Global Health: impact and prevention of occupational pathologies in developing countries.

Risk Assessment: contents and methodology.

Classification of risk factors (physical, chemical, biological agents, biomechanical and relational factors).

Occupational Hygiene: exposure limits to noxious agents, environmental and biological monitoring.

 

Occupational Pathology

Diseases due to physical agents

Thermal environment.

Biological effects of occupational exposure to vibrations.

Auditory and extra-auditory effects of exposure to noise.

Health effects of occupational exposure to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation (optical radiation included).

Diseases due to chemical agents

Occupational metal poisoning (lead, chromium, nickel).

Work-related skin diseases.

Occupational poisoning by aromatic solvents (toluene, xylene, styrene), aliphatic solvents (n-esane) and ketones (acetone).

Health effects of occupational exposure to plant protection products.

Risk from chemicals in the healthcare environment: antineoplastic drugs, volatile anaesthetics, formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, latex.

Occupational pneumopathies

Lung diseases due to dusts and chemical agents:  asthma, allergic alveolitis, pneumoconiosis, bronchopneumopathies.

Occupational cancers

Work-related neoplasias.

Diseases due to biological agents

Major occupational infections.

Diseases due to biomechanical factors

Musculoskeletal disorders due to biomechanical overload.

Diseases due to relational factors

Shiftwork and nightwork.

Stress, Burn-out, Mobbing.
