Course contents

The specific training targets of the Penitentiary Law: knowledge of the complex changes which have taken place the law of corrections from 1975 to date.
In particular, the course will focus on substitute punishments, alternative measures and prison benefits, including the procedural aspects of sentencing enforcement.
Indepth historical and comparative study of so called "escape" from prison sentencing, i.e. the extension of the range of punishmentsfor reasons of justice, special-preventive aims and other utilitarian ends.
A study of punishments in theory and in practice; the criteria underlying sentencing in practice; the discretionary power of judges and "constitutionally oriented" sentencing.
Some reference will be made to the sociology of sentencing in modern penology, especially thecrisis ofi correctional model of justice, the emergence of social discipline systems "outside the prison walls" and the present process of ri-carceration.
