Learning outcomes

At the end of the module the student knows the techniques of first aid and of vital signs, blood pressure and oximetry detection. The student learns the basics of BLSD to the patient in cardio-circulatory arrest.

The health needs of the person and the main theories of nursing.

Notes on the history and legislation of the healthcare organisation

Healthcare-related infections: definitions and strategies to contain them
Personal protective equipment: indications and use, with particular reference to the most common transmissible diseases in hospitals and COVID-19

Concepts of hygiene: sanitation, disinfection, antisepsis and sterilization, with particular reference to the management of sanitary devices in use.
Definition of health emergency and urgency

Intra-hospital emergency response systems

Approach to the patient:

head-to-toe assessment (ABCDE: Airways, Breathing, Circulation, Disabilities, Exposure)
The vital parameters:

Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS),
respiratory rate (RR),
pulse oximetry (spO2),
heart rate (HR),
blood pressure (BP),
pain


Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Defibrillation: Basic Life Support and Defibrillation course according to the Italian Resuscitation Council guidelines

Lectures, laboratory activities, group work, illustration of principals and recording instruments.

Assessment methods

The verification of learning takes place through a final exam which ascertains the acquisition of the expected knowledge and skills in the field of patient assistance through an oral and practical test which includes 2 theoretical questions on the main topics covered during the lessons, and the execution of one of the techniques performed during the practical exercises. The test will be evaluated on the basis of the following parameters: - knowledge, mastery and in-depth study of the contents - correct execution of the practical techniques according to the guidelines.
