Learning outcomes

By the end of the course the student will complete his/her mid-level competence in the Chinese language; he/she will be able to to study the relevant literature and the problems related to it, referring to the most updated bibliography.

Course contents


Fast overview from Shijing to Tang poets, 2 hours
Examples in Chinese from 5 Tang poets: to read, translate and learn by heart: Meng Haoran, Li Bai, Du Fu, Wang Wei, Pei Di, 20 hours

Introduction to Ming-Qing fiction 2 hours: three great novels:

2 hours: Shuihu zhuan 水浒传 - Reading of a short text

2 hours: Xiyouji 西游记 - Reading of a short text

2 hours: Honglou meng 红楼梦 - Reading of a short text

Teaching methods

Lectures, reading and translation of poems, and comments.

Reading of short narrative texts.


Assessment methods

Oral examination on the ability to orient oneselves on the poetic and narrative works introduced by the course of literary history.

Comments of two poems learnt by heart and presentation of the author.

The examination takes place in groups of three or four students and aims to create a space of dialogue  between students and teachers. Non-attending students will have to submit a written report of up to 5 pages, on a theme or author chosen from among the ones being handled in the course. When the essay concerns a poet requires at least one poem in Chinese, with characters and pinyin, personal translation and interpretative commentary.
