Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student os able to analyse the environmetnal and safety risks of chemical process in relation with the EU regulation and directive and to evaluate and select the possible techique for the risk mitigation and for the implementation of safe and sustainable process even using basic knowledge of intrinsicaly safe processes. The student is also able to operate a continuous improvment of the processes to ensure increasing safety and sustainalbility.
Course contents
The course give the basic knowledge on the law sources and environmental right principles and the main associated environmental risks; it analyse the approach based on process safety, product safety and work safety. It focuse on tematics related with the chemical product safety starting from the regulation at Eu level for the chemical sector such sas Reach to end with the aspects related to the safe use of chemical substances in laboratory. Durng the course it will be treaten the concepts of risk, risk evaluation and risks analysis connected with the chemical plant and processes; in particular the formation of explosive mixture, the use of solvent, the risk of run away and the risk of the chemical reaction in the process reactor; Moreover will be described the method of active and passive risk reduction and the process control. Finally the method and strategy for developing intrinsically safe process will be briefly treaten.
Pre-required Knowledge:
- Thermdynamic principles and chemical equilibrium
- Industrial process and oxidation reaction
biogeochemical cycles and environmental chemistry

Teaching methods
The curse will use blackboard and pc presentatio, example of safety plan and form for classroom work, exercises, case studies and home elaboration for "in itinere" evaluation.
Assessment methods
The assessment objective is to verify the acquired knowledge during the course and in particular the analisis, evaluation and mitigation of chemical, thermal risks and run away process. It will be also used to verify the knowledge of the environmental and safety regulation. The assesment will be done on a report and presentation prepared on a industrial process and presented during the examination which will give the opportunity to formulate question on the course content and program.
Teaching tools
The educational material presented in class will be made available to the student in electronic format in the internet on:: http://campus.unibo.it/-
