Learning outcomes
This course provides a survey of long-term economic change in Europe. At the end of this course and having completed the essential readings and activities, the students should have learnt to understand the evolution of european economies and to appreciate the different paths of development,with a critical approach on the current economic facts.
Course contents
The financial and commercial capitalism:from Venise to Amsterdam.The Industrial Revolution and how the Gold Standard worked in the first wave of globalisation:from London to Berlin.The patterns of development: market oriented,bank oriented.The role of the State.The consequences of WWI.The Hyperinflation in Germany.The planned economies.The Great Crash and the Great Depression.How "tax and spending"reduced the severity of business cicles fluctuations.Europe in Golden Age:Recovery,Wonders,Migrations.The reasons why the economic growth was so fast an why it fell:the Age of the Stagflation.The Monetarism and the Deregulation.The End of economic Dirigism,the collapse of the authoritarian regimes,the new wave of globalisation.From European Economic Community to European Union:the Euro,hopes and fears.

Teaching methods
Traditional lectures and discussions in the classroom.
Assessment methods
For students who attend the lectures,the exam will be based on a written test after one month from the beginning of the lessons,the discussion of an individual paper and two questions in the oral examination.For non attending:arrange with the teacher a written research at least two months before the date of exam,achieve a positive vote that will average with that of the oral examination,based on three questions.
