73509 - Laboratory of Chemical Reactors and Bioreactors M

Academic Year 2015/2016

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Chemical and Process Engineering (cod. 0929)

Learning outcomes

To be capable of designing and rating the basic types of chemical and biochemical reactors, with the aid of computerized tools.

Course contents

The course, that will take place in the computer lab, will tackle the main design and rating problem relatively to the main types of chemical reactor (batch, plug flow, stirred tank), of chemical reaction (reversible, irreversible, autocatalytic, reactions in series, parallel reactions, biochemical reactions) and of thermal conditions (isotherm reactor, adiabatic reactor, reactor with an assigned thermal flux).

For each topic, after a short introduction that will recall the theoretical elements taught in detail within the “Chemical Reactors” course, the instructor will present one or more design and rating problems, that the students will solve with the aid of specific software.

Readings/Bibliography

No specific text is suggested, as the course consists in the computer-aided resolution of design and verification problems.

Teaching methods

For each topic, after a short introduction that will recall the theoretical elements taught in detail within the “Chemical Reactors” course, the instructor will present one or more design and rating problems, that the students will solve with the aid of specific software.

Assessment methods

At the end of the course the students will deliver a report on the problems tackled, the solution techniques and the results obtained.

Teaching tools

The design and rating problems will be solved with the aid of informatics tools, such as Matlab, TK Solver and spreadsheets.
