Course contents

Applied Linguistics (40 hours, Prof. Gabriele Bersani Berselli): Introduction to pragmatics: Literal vs. Speaker Meaning; Grice's Cooperation Principle and Conversational Maxims; Conversational implicatures; Presuppositions; Speech Acts Theory: Austin, Searle. Introduction to applied linguistics: fields of research and application; language use in context; language as social action; Analysing spoken discourse: text.

Course materials consist in a series of articles which will be discussed during lectures.

Teaching methods

Lectures and group work. 

Assessment methods

Applied Linguistics: At the end of the module there will be examination on the contents of the module and the associated readings. The examination will take the form of a two-hour written paper.
