31414 - Thermo-Fluid Dynamics Computational Laboratory T

Academic Year 2014/2015

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Energy Engineering (cod. 0935)

Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide informations and methodologies for the resolution of fluid-dynamics and heat transfer problems, by employing numerical techniques. Optimization of technological devices.

Course contents

The course aimes to give to the students a view on the principal numerical methods, in the branch of the computational fluid-dynamic topics, with particular reference to the use a common commercial software packages, such as COMSOL MULTIPHYSICS (© Comsol, Inc). First, the following numerical methods will be presented:

1) finite difference methods for the solution of the momentum and energy local balance equations;

2) spatial discretizzation in one or more dimensions;

3) finite elements methods: Galerkin method.

Moreover, some excercises will be proposed to be solved by employing a commercial software package. Those excercise will concern principally the following topics: bidimensional steady-state conduction, forced convection with viscous dissipation in ducts, natural convection in 2D cavities, external flow past a cylinder, bidimensional unsteady conduction.

Readings/Bibliography

Booklet given by the Teacher.

ARPACI V.S. LARSEN P.S. CONVECTION HEAT TRANSFER PRENTICE-HALL INC. ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS 1984.

More references will be provided by the Teacher during the lessons.

Teaching methods

In the first part of the course (6 hours ca.)  lessons in the class will be proposed. Then, some guided laboratory excercises, will be proposed.

Assessment methods

The examination consist in a practical experience at the computer; the track will be very similkar to those solved during the course. During the examination books or notes are not allowed.

Teaching tools

Computer room, with pc available for the exercises.
